Formal Flood Investigations (Section 19)

Under Section 19 of the Flood and Water Management Act, Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ as the Lead Local Flood Authority, has a duty to investigate and publish reports on significant flood events that occur within its area to the extent that is considered it necessary or appropriate.

On becoming aware of a flood in its boundary, a Lead Local Flood Authority must, to the extent that it considers it necessary or appropriate, investigate:

  • which risk management authorities have relevant flood risk management functions
  • whether each of those risk management authorities (RMAs) has exercised, or is proposing to exercise, those functions in response to the flood

Where an authority carries out an investigation, it must:

  • publish the results of its investigation
  • notify any relevant risk management authorities

The Councils Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS) sets out the established significance criteria for formal flood investigations. See the latest strategy on the ‘Lead Local Flood Authority’ page.

Obtaining Formal Flood Investigation Reports

Where a formal flood investigation has been carried out and to protect confidentiality, we remove personal/property details from reports.

You can request a copy of a completed Flood Investigation Report by contacting: FloodRiskManagement@Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾.gov.uk

Informal Flood Investigations

When a flood event is reported to us and we investigate but find that a formal investigation is not required, we will share our findings with the person who reported the flooding and with other flood risk management authorities and relevant landowners/occupiers. We also record the review to help us make decisions about future flood risk management.
